Bharat Microgrid advancing ‘Smart Renewable Microgrid’ concept for Indian Navy

To implement the vision of Prime Minister towards achieving technology indigenization and energy efficiency, Indian Navy has taken a lead over all other Services and Organisations under the Ministry of Defence by initiating the first utility scale Microgrid project planned at INS Shivaji, Lonavala. Globally this concept is primarily being adopted by advanced nations like USA, Netherlands, Japan etc for making their national power infrastructure resilient to disasters, energy efficient and capable of significant renewable energy integration. Microgrids are small, site-specific electrical power generation and distribution systems which deliver the advantages of energy assurance, energy efficiency and energy access to user and provide the sustainable method of renewable energy integration.

To reach this stage, Indian Navy enlisted the assistance of relatively small but capable Indian companies for past two years. These companies have now come together under the banner of 'Bharat Microgrids'. The Bharat Microgrid alliance is aimed towards creating indigenous Microgrid capability for providing full spectrum solutions for widest range of applications from Rural Microgrids to utility scale Military Microgrids. Indigenous capability in Microgrid control system is important to Govt. from cyber-security perspective as Microgrids are the recommended power architecture for critical assets.

The three constituents of Bharat Microgrid are Emergent Ventures India - a reputed Gurgaon based consultant in clean technologies promoted by Mr Vinod Kala, Saurya Enertech – a Gurgaon based solar EPC company promoted by former IIT Kanpur scientists, Dr Vibha Tripathi and Dr Satyendra Kumar and Strength Five Consulting – a NOIDA based consulting practice promoted by Army veteran, Lt Col Vikas Sharma, focused on identifying technology solutions for Defence, their concept development and capacity building.

“We will partner with specialized technology companies such as Windstream Technologies, who are producing path breaking wind-solar hybrids, displayed in the maritime exhibition, and offer unique solutions for green micro grids across India’ said Vinod Kala.

Bharat Micro Grid presentation has received tremendous public interest and the AP Chief Minister, Shri Chandrababu Naidu, too expressed his awareness of the promise and potential of Microgrids.
